About Wales
Welsh language
The vast majority of people in Wales speak English. Yet the Welsh language is the country's most important distinguishing feature, underpinning its distinctive identity and culture.
Welsh language (Cymraeg), which is spoken by 21% of the country's 3 million inhabitants, has its origins in the Celtic peoples who inhabited the land both before and after the Romans extended their empire into Wales.
In fact, Welsh is one of Europe's oldest languages!
